Mehr InformationenHailing from California, I’MMORTAL spent her childhood and teenage years playing violin in orchestras, unknowingly developing composition skills crucial for her current music production. With a theater background, she discovered her love for singing during high school musicals. Despite a fondness for classical music, she’s an avid listener of EDM, drawn to its gritty basslines and synthetic production. I’MMORTAL’s audio-visual synesthesia makes fusing otherworldly visuals to her imaginative beats only come naturally to her. Her campy visual work often encompasses themes of death and rebirth, the natural world versus artificial constructs, femininity, and her AAPI identity.
With a sound influenced by Sevdaliza, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Bjork and SOPHIE (to name but a few, I’MMORTAL’s sound is sure to ensnare fans of the aforementioned avant-pop luminaries as well as Billie Eilish and Pastel Ghost. ‘Uncanny Valley’ is a sonic and conceptual exploration of what blurs the line between human and machine. Showcasing I’MMORTAL’s growing prowess as a producer and storyteller, the track features eerie sound effects like door creaks, sharp trap beats, and glitchy, autotuned vocals. The song builds to a club-ready bridge, with thumping bass and dizzying synths, before dissolving into a haunting finish of futuristic beeps.
The accompanying music video, directed by Victoria Gong, features I’MMORTAL eerily-dressed in pearlescent white, seated at a table facing a clone of herself – and both are humanoid robots. We see her playing with a dollhouse, having her pulse checked by nurses, and undergoing a Turing test. The video erupts as the song shifts to its thumping four-on-the-floor bridge; the two I’MMORTALs circle the table before pouncing on each other, courting each other in a dance that is both contemporary and confrontational, bathed in disorientation by flashing lights. One ultimately defeats the other, walking away from the dramatic dance to the death with nonchalant poise. Which version of her is it? We’ll never know.
I’MMORTAL shared: “Working on Uncanny Valley’s music video was truly such an amazing collaborative experience. The director Victoria Gong conceptualized the vision, led such a talented team, and was able pull off such a cohesive and stunning video experience. She is such a visionary, yet is so detail oriented, and knew exactly how to go about representing my artistry and my track visually. She really captured the eerie essence of “Uncanny Valley” perfectly, while keeping the integrity of a pop video. Having two identical humanoid A.I. robots undergo a Turing test, and then fight to the death in a choreographed dance-fight scene is definitely my idea of a cutting edge pop video!
I really love incorporating movement into my videos, so I was super excited when Victoria came up with the brilliant idea of having a choreographed fight scene that is also an abstract dance piece. Dove Che, our movement director, is such a genius because he knew exactly how to execute Victoria’s vision of balancing dance and fight. I had the most amazing body double, KiKi Song, who is such a talented and versatile dancer. Together, the four of us rehearsed the movement for a couple of months, I think it really paid off in the end.”
