The Finnish band SUOTANA transports listeners into the mystical wilderness of Lapland. With their new album “OUNAS II”, they combine epic stories, Nordic mythology, and powerful melodic death metal into a unique sonic experience. In our interview, Pasi and Ville talk about the making of the album, their connection to nature, their musical evolution, and what fans can expect from the upcoming European tour.

Congratulations on your new release “OUNAS II”! What does this album mean to you personally – and how does it differ from the first chapter?

Pasi: Ounas II is a majestic ending for the Ounas saga. Technically challenging, poetically adventurous and compositionally beautifully fitting to finish the river journey. Since the Ounas sessions began during the pandemic, for me personally, Ounas II is the conclusion to one unprecedented, incredible journey.

Ville: Ounas II differs from the first part by being faster, more melodic, more technical, and I’d even go as far as to say it’s a more epic than previous part.

“The Crowned King of Ancient Forest” feels like more than just a song – it’s a legend in musical form. What inspired the story of this mythical elk?

Ville: The song’s atmosphere flows seamlessly between music and lyrics, with a lot of attention given to creating a deep, unified emotional landscape. The start of the song is a quote from a traditional Finnish folk poem about moose which was considered demigod-like creature alongside with bear in the Finnish pagan beliefs. In the Finnish pagan beliefs people were divided into the clan of the moose and to the clan of the bear depending where they lived.

Your lyrics and compositions are deeply rooted in Finnish mythology and nature. How important is that connection during your creative process?

Ville: Suotana’s roots lie deep in the wilderness of Finnish Lapland, and we’ve been drawing inspiration from there since the very beginning. It feels like an inexhaustible source that always offers something new and intriguing. It’s been a joy to see how naturally the essence of the North seeps into our songs and it doesn’t need to be forced. Very often when I compose melodies, I think of them as pieces of nature and that connection tends to find its way into the music.

Your music blends melodic death metal with elements of black and power metal – how do you manage to balance aggression, atmosphere, and melody so effectively?

Pasi: I would argue that black and power metal are opposite sides of the same coin when it comes to finding a way to present the epicness of Lappish nature. The array of emotions is then tied together with melodic death metal. In addition, our personal tastes revolve more or less around these genres.

You’ve been active since 2005 – looking back, how has your journey been so far? Are there any milestones or challenges that particularly stand out?

Pasi: It has been quite a long ride and the early years are rather distant memories by now, but I am grateful to have too many milestones to point out particularly. Every show and tour has been memorable in every way and always fun meeting with fans during those occasions when possible.

Ville: In the early years of Suotana, writing songs and playing guitar was simply fun and very therapeutic and nothing else really mattered. But as the years went by and things still seemed to click, Pasi and I started thinking it would be great to get more people involved and actually play these songs as a full band. I think it was around 2013 when we finally managed to put the lineup together, and that marked the beginning of a new chapter for Suotana, leading us to where the band is today.
As Pasi said, it’s been a long journey when you stop to think about it but it still doesn’t feel like we’re anywhere near the end. The fire is very much alive. There have been plenty of ups and downs along the way, but one major recent highlight was our Asia tour in 2024. That’s something I could’ve never imagined back when I was just a young kid picking up a guitar for the first time and learning my way around the fretboard.

After releasing OUNAS II, you’ll be heading out on a big European tour with WOLFHEART, BEFORE THE DAWN, and FULL HOUSE BREW CREW. What does this tour mean to you?

Pasi: Always a great honour to tour with such legendary names and talented people. We have been supporting them in a few Finnish shows in the past, which provided us with highly valuable experience as well as good memories, so we are really looking towards the tour to gain some more.

Ville: It’s fantastic to be going on tour with this lineup, and we’re really grateful for the opportunity. Our last European tour left us with a great feeling, and we’re genuinely excited to get back out there and play our music for amazing fans at many amazing venues across Europe.

Many shows on the tour are already close to sold out – what can fans expect from a live SUOTANA experience? Any special highlights or surprises in store?

Pasi: Not to reveal too much but for those who have not yet witnessed Suotana live before, get ready for Nordic mysticism and thunder. You will be greeted with a force of northern wilderness. The show you do not want to miss out!

Ville: It’s been over a year since our last European tour, so you could say it’s a new year and new adventures! It’s really great to hear that people have been buying tickets and supporting live music in a way that helps make future shows possible.

Your sound has clearly evolved over the years. Which musical or personal influences had the biggest impact on the creation of OUNAS II?

Ville: The music grows along with the band and it’s inevitable. It’s hard to pinpoint any specific influence behind the creation of the OUNAS II album, other than that familiar, majestic northern nature with all its wonders.

Your songs often tell large, epic stories – do you see yourselves more as musicians, storytellers, or poets of nature?

Pasi: Definitely poets of nature first and musicians second. We are painting a picture for listeners to feel the brutality and beauty of northern nature through our music. Of course, as within all art, it is always the listener to decide how they observe it.

Finally: where do you see SUOTANA in five or ten years – and what are your hopes for the future of the band?

Pasi: Looking forward to having more music to be released and more shows abroad, whenever we are not busy wandering somewhere in the forests of Lapland.
Ville: Just like Pasi said it.

Die finnische Band SUOTANA entführt ihre Hörer in die mystische Wildnis Lapplands. Mit ihrem neuen Album „OUNAS II“ verbinden sie epische Geschichten, nordische Mythologie und kraftvollen Melodic Death Metal zu einem einzigartigen Klangerlebnis. In unserem Interview sprechen Pasi und Ville über die Entstehung des Albums, die Verbindung zur Natur, ihre musikalische Entwicklung und was Fans von der bevorstehenden Europatour erwarten können.

Glückwunsch zur neuen Veröffentlichung „OUNAS II“! Was bedeutet euch dieses Album persönlich – und worin unterscheidet es sich vom ersten Kapitel?

Pasi: „Ounas II“ ist ein majestätisches Ende der Ounas-Saga. Technisch herausfordernd, poetisch abenteuerlich und kompositorisch perfekt passend, um die Flussreise zu beenden. Da die Ounas-Sessions während der Pandemie begannen, ist „Ounas II“ für mich persönlich der Abschluss einer beispiellosen, unglaublichen Reise.

Ville: „Ounas II“ unterscheidet sich vom ersten Teil durch ein schnelleres, melodischeres und technisch anspruchsvolleres Spiel. Ich würde sogar sagen, dass es epischer ist als der vorherige Teil.

„The Crowned King of Ancient Forest“ fühlt sich an wie mehr als nur ein Song – es ist eine Legende in musikalischer Form. Was inspirierte die Geschichte dieses mythischen Elchs?

Ville: Die Atmosphäre des Songs fließt nahtlos zwischen Musik und Texten, mit viel Aufmerksamkeit auf die Schaffung einer tiefen, einheitlichen emotionalen Landschaft. Der Anfang des Songs zitiert ein traditionelles finnisches Volksgedicht über Elche, die in den finnischen heidnischen Glaubensvorstellungen als halbgöttliche Wesen neben dem Bären galten. Die Menschen wurden dort je nach Wohnort entweder dem Clan des Elchs oder dem Clan des Bären zugeordnet.

Eure Texte und Kompositionen sind tief in finnischer Mythologie und Natur verwurzelt. Wie wichtig ist diese Verbindung für euren kreativen Prozess?

Ville: Suotanas Wurzeln liegen tief in der Wildnis Lapplands, und wir schöpfen seit Beginn Inspiration daraus. Es ist eine unerschöpfliche Quelle, die immer etwas Neues und Spannendes bietet. Es macht Freude zu sehen, wie natürlich die Essenz des Nordens in unsere Songs einfließt, ohne dass man sie erzwingen muss. Sehr oft, wenn ich Melodien komponiere, betrachte ich sie als Stücke der Natur – und diese Verbindung findet ihren Weg in die Musik.

Eure Musik verbindet melodischen Death Metal mit Elementen von Black und Power Metal – wie schafft ihr es, Aggression, Atmosphäre und Melodie so effektiv zu balancieren?

Pasi: Ich würde sagen, Black und Power Metal sind zwei Seiten derselben Medaille, wenn es darum geht, die Epik der lappländischen Natur darzustellen. Das breite Emotionsspektrum wird dann durch melodischen Death Metal zusammengehalten. Außerdem drehen sich unsere persönlichen Vorlieben mehr oder weniger um diese Genres.

Ihr seid seit 2005 aktiv – rückblickend, wie war eure Reise bisher? Gibt es Meilensteine oder Herausforderungen, die besonders herausragen?

Pasi: Es war eine lange Reise, und die frühen Jahre sind mittlerweile eher ferne Erinnerungen, aber ich bin dankbar für die vielen Meilensteine. Jede Show und Tour war auf ihre Weise unvergesslich, und es hat immer Spaß gemacht, Fans zu treffen.

Ville: In den Anfangsjahren war das Schreiben von Songs und das Gitarrespielen einfach nur Spaß und therapeutisch, sonst nichts. Als die Jahre vergingen und alles immer noch passte, dachten Pasi und ich, dass es großartig wäre, mehr Leute einzubeziehen und die Songs als komplette Band zu spielen. Um 2013 herum haben wir dann endlich das Line-up zusammenbekommen – das war ein neuer Abschnitt für Suotana und führte uns dorthin, wo die Band heute steht. Wie Pasi sagte: Es war eine lange Reise, aber es fühlt sich immer noch nicht nach Ende an. Das Feuer brennt sehr lebendig. Ein besonderes Highlight war unsere Asien-Tour 2024 – etwas, das ich mir als Kind beim ersten Gitarrenunterricht nie hätte vorstellen können.

Nach „OUNAS II“ geht ihr auf eine große Europatour mit WOLFHEART, BEFORE THE DAWN und FULL HOUSE BREW CREW. Was bedeutet euch diese Tour?

Pasi: Es ist immer eine große Ehre, mit so legendären und talentierten Künstlern zu touren. Wir haben sie bereits bei ein paar finnischen Shows unterstützt, was uns wertvolle Erfahrungen und tolle Erinnerungen gebracht hat, und wir freuen uns darauf, nun noch mehr zu lernen.

Ville: Es ist fantastisch, mit dieser Besetzung auf Tour zu gehen, und wir sind sehr dankbar für die Gelegenheit. Unsere letzte Europatour hat ein großartiges Gefühl hinterlassen, und wir freuen uns sehr, unsere Musik wieder live für die Fans in ganz Europa zu spielen.

Viele Shows auf der Tour sind fast ausverkauft – was können Fans von einem Live-Erlebnis mit SUOTANA erwarten? Gibt es besondere Highlights oder Überraschungen?

Pasi: Um nicht zu viel zu verraten: Wer Suotana noch nie live gesehen hat, sollte sich auf nordische Mystik und Donner gefasst machen. Euch erwartet die Kraft der nördlichen Wildnis – ein Konzert, das man nicht verpassen sollte!

Ville: Es ist über ein Jahr her seit unserer letzten Europatour, also könnte man sagen: Neues Jahr, neue Abenteuer! Es ist großartig zu sehen, dass die Menschen Tickets kaufen und Live-Musik auf diese Weise unterstützen.

Euer Sound hat sich über die Jahre deutlich entwickelt. Welche musikalischen oder persönlichen Einflüsse hatten den größten Einfluss auf „OUNAS II“?

Ville: Die Musik wächst mit der Band, das ist unvermeidlich. Ein spezieller Einfluss lässt sich schwer bestimmen – außer der vertrauten, majestätischen Natur des Nordens mit all ihren Wundern.

Eure Songs erzählen oft große, epische Geschichten – seht ihr euch eher als Musiker, Geschichtenerzähler oder Poeten der Natur?

Pasi: Definitiv zuerst als Poeten der Natur und dann als Musiker. Wir malen ein Bild, damit die Zuhörer die Brutalität und Schönheit der nördlichen Natur durch unsere Musik fühlen können. Natürlich entscheidet jeder Hörer selbst, wie er das aufnimmt.

Abschließend: Wo seht ihr SUOTANA in fünf oder zehn Jahren – und was sind eure Hoffnungen für die Zukunft der Band?

Pasi: Wir hoffen, noch mehr Musik zu veröffentlichen und mehr Shows im Ausland zu spielen – wann immer wir nicht gerade durch die Wälder Lapplands wandern.

Ville: Genau wie Pasi gesagt hat.
