Mit ihrem neuen Album Heartbeat-Shake (VÖ: 05.09.2025) liefert die Dresdner Band Tinted House ein musikalisches Kaleidoskop – wild, poetisch, verletzlich und voller Überraschungen. Wir durften der Band (Sängerin – Carina, Gitarrist – Johannes) einige Fragen stellen: zu ihrer besonderen Entstehungsgeschichte, zur kreativen Freiheit im Studio, zu Carinas Bühnenfreundschaft mit Büchern – und natürlich zur bevorstehenden Tour.

Euer neues Album Heartbeat-Shake klingt unglaublich facettenreich – war das eine bewusste Abkehr vom Sound eures Debüts Heavens oder hat sich das einfach organisch entwickelt?

Johannes: Eine bewusste Abkehr war es nicht, aber einiges wollten wir doch anders machen – schon aus Neugier. Der Prozess war generell auch ein anderer. Bei unserem Debütalbum waren alle Songs schon fertig, bevor wir ans Aufnehmen gingen. Diesmal sind die meisten Songs eigentlich parallel zu den Aufnahmen entstanden. Das hat die Lieder stark beeinflusst und war sicher auch ein Grund dafür, dass es – wie du sagst – sehr facettenreich geworden ist. Da wir die Platte in unserem eigenen Studio/Proberaum aufgenommen haben, hatten wir außerdem genug Zeit und Freiheit zum Experimentieren, ohne uns Sorgen um die Produktionskosten machen zu müssen. Ich glaube, wir haben mindestens noch sieben weitere Songs gemacht, die es am Ende gar nicht auf die Platte geschafft haben.

Carina: Die Abkehr vom Sound von Heavens war sowohl organisch als auch bewusst. Wir haben mit den neuen Songideen frei experimentiert und uns dennoch bewusst dagegen entschieden, alle Songs mit nur einem bestimmten Ansatz zu bearbeiten – was manchmal als Parameter sogar sehr nützlich sein kann. Stattdessen haben wir jeden Song individuell betrachtet und so lange ausprobiert, bis wir zufrieden waren. Dabei wurde uns klar, wie unterschiedlich die Songs sind – und wir hofften, dass genau das die Stärke des Albums wird.

„Living under same roof but leading different lives“ beschreibt ihr als zentrales Motiv. Könnt ihr uns einen Song nennen, der dieses Gefühl für euch besonders stark ausdrückt?

Carina: Der Song, der mir dazu einfällt, ist Don’t Say I Never Gave You Nothing. Der Ansatz für diesen Song war sehr einzigartig – wir haben geloopt und mit Wiederholungen auf eine neue Weise gearbeitet. Inhaltlich geht es darum, seinem inneren Weg zu folgen, was meiner Meinung nach oft bedeutet, sich auch der Einsamkeit zu stellen.

Carina, du sprichst davon, dass Bücher auf der Bühne wie Freunde sind – welchen Einfluss hat Literatur auf euer Songwriting? Gibt es Texte auf dem Album, die direkt von einem Gedicht inspiriert wurden?

Carina: Bücher sind für mich sowohl im Leben als auch auf der Bühne Freunde – es stimmt, und inzwischen habe ich sie bei Auftritten immer dabei. Literatur und Poesie berühren mein Herz, lehren mich etwas über das Menschsein und werfen auch ein Licht auf meine eigenen Erfahrungen. Keiner der Songs ist direkt von einem Gedicht inspiriert, aber im Jahr 2024, als wir das Album schrieben und produzierten, habe ich viel von Ocean Vuong, Paul Auster, Mary Oliver und Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gelesen.

Euer Studioansatz wirkt wie ein Abenteuer für Klangforscher: alte 4-Track-Rekorder, Kontaktmikros, Field Recordings… Gibt es einen Moment aus dem Studio, der euch besonders in Erinnerung geblieben ist?

Johannes: Das mit den Kontaktmikrofonen war schon ein cooler Moment. Wir haben es einfach schnell mit Klebeband an die E-Gitarre gepappt – und plötzlich entstanden diese seltsamen „honky“ Sounds. Für mich hat das die Tür zum Song Dizzygeöffnet.

Außerdem gehören für mich immer die Momente zu den schönsten, wenn Carina tanzt, während sie ihre Vocals einsingt.

Die Liste eurer musikalischen Einflüsse scheint endlos. Gibt es trotzdem Künstler*innen oder Bands, auf deren Schultern Heartbeat-Shake ganz besonders steht?

Johannes: Bei diesem Album habe ich das Gefühl, dass beinahe jeder Song einem anderen Einfluss folgt – wahrscheinlich müsste man die Liste sogar noch erweitern.

Carina: Das Einzige, was wir nach Hause kommend immer hören wollten, war Yo La Tengo.

Ihr startet eure Tour am 5. September in Dresden – eurer Heimatbasis. Was bedeutet es euch, dieses besondere Album dort erstmals live zu präsentieren?

Carina: Heartbeat-Shake in Dresden zu präsentieren, ist das Natürlichste, was wir tun können. Wir haben eine unglaublich unterstützende Community und freuen uns darauf, in einem Club zu spielen, in dem wir noch nie zuvor aufgetreten sind.

Johannes: Es ist auch schön zu wissen, dass viele Menschen, die uns nahestehen und uns während der Produktion des Albums begleitet haben, beim Release-Konzert dabei sein können.

Eure Liveshows gelten als intensiv und unvorhersehbar. Wie viel Raum bleibt euch auf der Bühne für Improvisation?

Carina: Der Raum für Improvisation hängt bei uns stark von der Stimmung ab – und genau das macht jedes Konzert zu einem einzigartigen Erlebnis, finde ich.

Johannes: Wir spielen die Songs live selten genau so wie auf dem Album und haben viele Stellen, bei denen wir nur grobe Absprachen treffen. Wenn wir selbst nicht immer genau wissen, wie jeder einzelne Teil abläuft oder wie wir einen Song zu Ende bringen, bleibt die Show für uns und das Publikum lebendiger – lieber geht mal etwas daneben, als dass wir nur „auf Nummer sicher“ spielen.

Tinted House ist eine Band mit internationalen Wurzeln – inwiefern beeinflusst eure kulturelle Vielfalt eure Musik?

Johannes: Eigentlich merken wir immer, dass wir zwar aus verschiedenen Ländern kommen, aber am Ende mit derselben Musik aufgewachsen sind – nur dass drei von uns die englischen Texte als Teenager nie so richtig verstanden haben.

Wenn ihr Heartbeat-Shake in einem Satz beschreiben müsstet, den es so noch nicht gibt – wie würde er lauten?

Carina: Heartbeat-Shake ist das, was passiert, nachdem du einen hyperrealistischen Traum von deinem zehnjährigen Klassentreffen hattest.

Zum Schluss: Was wünscht ihr euch, dass die Hörer*innen aus dem Album mitnehmen – vielleicht sogar für ihr eigenes Leben?

Johannes: Ein Gefühl von Authentizität – seinen eigenen Impulsen zu folgen. Irgendwo öffnet sich immer eine Tür, auch wenn viele davor verschlossen waren.

Carina: Ich hoffe, sie bekommen ein Gefühl von Nahrung – sei es emotional, spirituell oder auf eine andere Weise.

🎤 “A heartbeat that shakes everything – Tinted House in conversation about Heartbeat-Shake, the tour kick-off, and creative freedom”

With their new album Heartbeat-Shake (release date: September 5, 2025), Dresden-based band Tinted House delivers a musical kaleidoscope – wild, poetic, vulnerable, and full of surprises. We had the pleasure of speaking with the band (singer Carina and guitarist Johannes) about their unique creative process, their freedom in the studio, Carina’s on-stage friendship with books – and, of course, the upcoming tour.

Your new album Heartbeat-Shake sounds incredibly diverse – was this a deliberate departure from the sound of your debut Heavens, or did it just develop organically?

Johannes: It wasn’t a deliberate departure, but we did want to do some things differently – simply out of curiosity. The process was also quite different. For our debut album, all the songs were already finished before we started recording. This time, most of the songs were actually created in parallel with the recordings. That had a big influence on the music and was probably one reason why it turned out to be, as you say, so diverse. Since we recorded the album in our own studio/rehearsal space, we also had plenty of time and freedom to experiment without worrying about production costs. I think we made at least seven more songs that ultimately didn’t make it onto the album.

Carina: The departure from the sound of “Heavens” was both organic and conscious. We
experimented with the new song ideas freely, and yet consciously decided not to manipulate the songs with one specific approach, which can honestly sometimes be very useful as a parameter. However, we worked with each song individually, experimenting until we were happy with the results. Along the way we realized how varied the songs were, and were hoping that it would be the strength of the album.

“Living under the same roof but leading different lives” is described as a central theme. Can you name one song that captures this feeling most strongly for you?

Carina: The song that comes to mind is “Don’t Say I Never Gave You Nothing”. The approach to the song was very unique- we looped and worked with repetition in a new way – and the content of the song is about following one’s inner path, which I think requires facing alone-ness.

Carina, you’ve said that books are like friends to you on stage – how does literature influence your songwriting? Are there any lyrics on the album that were directly inspired by a poem?

Carina: Books are my friends both in life and on stage, it’s true, and I now always have them with me in performances. Literature and poetry touch my heart, teach me about the human experience, and shine light on own experiences. None of the songs are directly inspired by a poem, though I was reading Ocean Vuong, Paul Auster, Mary Oliver, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in 2024 when we wrote and produced the album.

Your studio approach sounds like an adventure for sound explorers: old 4-track recorders, contact mics, field recordings… Is there a studio moment that stands out most in your memory?

Johannes: The thing with the contact microphones was definitely a cool moment. We just quickly taped one to the electric guitar – and suddenly these strange, “honky” sounds appeared. For me, that opened the door to the song Dizzy.

And one of my favorite moments is always when Carina dances while recording her vocals.

Your list of musical influences seems endless. Are there still artists or bands on whose shoulders Heartbeat-Shake especially stands?

Johannes: With this album, I feel like almost every song follows a different influence – we’d probably have to extend the list even further.

Carina: although the one thing we always wanted to listen to when coming home was „Yo la tango“

You start your tour on September 5 in Dresden – your home base. What does it mean to you to premiere this special album there?

Carina: Premiering Heartbeat-Shake in Dresden is the most natural thing we could do. We have an amazingly supportive community and are excited to play in a club we’ve never played before.

Johannes: It’s also nice to know that many people close to us – and who were with us during the album’s production – will be at the release show.

Your live shows are known for being intense and unpredictable. How much room do you leave for improvisation on stage?

Carina: The room we leave for improvisation is dependent on our mood – which makes every concert much more of a unique experience i think

Johannes: We rarely play the songs live exactly as they are on the album and there are many sections where we just have loose arrangements. If we ourselves don’t always know exactly how each part will go or how we’ll end a song, the show stays more alive – for us and for the audience. I’d rather something go wrong than just play it safe.

Tinted House is a band with international roots – how does your cultural diversity influence your music?

Johannes: We actually always notice that, although we come from different countries, we grew up with the same music – except that three of us didn’t really understand the English lyrics as teenagers.

If you had to describe Heartbeat-Shake in one sentence that doesn’t exist yet – what would it be?

Carina: Heartbeat-Shake is what happens after a hyper-realistic dream of your ten-year class reunion.

Finally: What do you hope listeners will take away from the album – maybe even for their own lives?

Johannes: A sense of authenticity – following your own impulses. Somewhere, a door always opens, even if many before were closed.

Carina: I hope they get a sense of nourishment, whether it be emotional, spiritual or something else.
