Emerging indie folk artist Jan Kalter has unveiled his haunting new single ‘Save Our Souls’, accompanied by a moving lyric video, released on 13 January 2023 via the Cold Skipper Inc. imprint. The song is taken off his debut No One Bites And No One Barks EP, which has already amassed over 400,000 streams across platforms, showcasing an arresting first step into the spotlight, carving space for himself among Indie Folk’s most affecting storytellers.

Born in Nordhorn, Germany and now based in Cologne, Jan Kalter is a rising voice in indie folk. His journey began as a child sneaking in piano sessions at a neighbour’s house, eventually expanding into guitar, trombone, and vocals. Starting out in grunge bands, Kalter gradually found his home in indie folk, where raw vulnerability and quiet intensity intersect. Drawing sonic parallels to Bon IverNovo AmorLord Huron, and Sufjan Stevens, who he cites as influential in shaping his sound.

‘Save Our Souls’ is a subtly glimmering ballad bathed in reverb and poignant emotion. The instrumental arrangement is immaculately delicate, with soft acoustic textures and gossamer choral backing vocals creating an intimate yet vast landscape for Jan’s wistful vocals to shine through with quiet, aching potency. The accompanying lyric video beautifully echoes this sentiment, and emphasises the introspective, melancholic atmosphere of the single through dreamy, vintage footage of misty forest terrain.

Speaking on the track, Jan Kalter shared: “‘Save Our Souls’ came from a place of deep reflection on how we connect — or sometimes fail to connect — with each other in challenging times. I wanted the song to feel raw and intimate, so I kept the arrangement stripped-back, letting the voice and acoustic textures carry the emotion. The recording process was almost like a live performance, capturing imperfections that make it human. For me, it’s a call for empathy and presence, wrapped in a folk sound that feels both fragile and hopeful.”
