Die Story der Lazy Giants liest sich wie ein Postpunk-Schundroman: Ende der 70er spielten sie unter anderen Namen schon mit den Ramones und waren als Support für das berüchtigte letzte Konzert der Sex Pistols in San Francisco gebucht. Doch immer wieder wurde die von 1980 bis 2023 Toiling Midgets genannte Band ausgebremst: Bandmitglieder starben, hatten Nervenzusammenbrüche, überdosierten, oder waren mit anderen Projekten (z.B. Flipperoder American Music Club) erfolgreicher.
Dass nun endlich ihr neues, erstes Album als Lazy Giants beim The Mars Volta-Label Clouds Hill veröffentlicht wird, unterstreicht, dass sie für viele experimentellen Gitarrenbands, darunter auch Sonic Youth oder Pavement ein wichtiger Einfluss waren.
Produziert wurde „Toiling Days Are Over“ von der Band selbst, das Mastering übernahm das aus Seattle stammende Urgestein Jack Endino (Produzent von u.a. Nirvana, Soundgarden) Der schwirrende Sound der zwei Urgitarristen Craig Gray und Paul Hood, die Jeff Buckleykurz vor seinem Tod als Inspiration nannte, kombiniert mit der Energie der jungen Neuzugänge Daniel Czerny (Lydia Lunch) und Daniel Benyamin (SEA + AIR) an Drums, Bass und Gesang macht die Band nach wie vor zu einer relevanten Instanz des Postpunk.
„Toiling Days Are Over“ erschien am 13. Oktober 2023 via Clouds Hill. Physisch wird das Album auf Vinyl und CD für die Dauer der Europa-Tour exklusiv nach den Shows erhältlich sein. Der Pre-Order startet heute mit dem Tourauftakt in Leipzig über den Clouds Hill Shop und Bandcamp.

Craig Gray: „In 1977 I started the punk rock band Negative Trend in San Francisco. Malcom McLaren tried to get us on the Sex Pistols gig at the last minute. Read about it here. When Negative Trend broke up I started Toiling M*****ts in 1980 with guitarist Paul Hood. Here are some reviews including the NY Times and Melody Maker. We were together for 40 years in one incarnation or another (see TM Bandcamp). This tour is a chance to carry on a legacy and move forward as a musical unit. This first tour as Lazy Giants will be, a bit oddly, our debut. Same with the new LP, our debut on Clouds Hill. Life is f*****g weird.“
Paul Hood: „It’s great to be back in Germany. I am looking forward to the tour and visiting some places I’ve never been but heard about for years. I love meeting fans on the road, and it’s just a great time to be out playing the music from this record. We always seem to surprise people who haven’t heard us in a while, or just hear us for the first time because it’s definitely a powerful and unique experience. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.“
Daniel C: „It’s been over a year since we played shows together in the USA, so I am really itching to get on the road now. It’s even more exciting for me this time since I will also be playing bass guitar and we are even playing my hometown, that’s a cherry on the cake for me. I’m also looking forward to being back in Amsterdam for the first time since playing in Red Light Radio in 2015 and in Bologna for the first time since supporting Florence and the Machine on her tour in 2016. In Bologna we are playing the same festival as Lydia Lunch, who took me to Italy as her bassist in 2018, how mad is that?! This tour will be full of flashbacks for me!“
Daniel B: „This is my fourth tour with the band and the first with a new album and new material, so it‘ s exciting to see this wild bunch of songs develop their own life in concert. I am looking forward to tour Italy and Czech after touring there a lot in the 10’s with SEA + AIR and, of course knowing my sometime hometowns Stuttgart, Berlin, Leipzig, Karlsruhe and Erfurt on the list makes me happy. This is the most energetic music I’ve played since my childhood days with Jumbo Jet, I’m very stoked.“
