Rising Portland-based producer FENRA released his sophomore EP, CHICAGO, with its mesmerizing focus track ‘CHICAGO PM’ on March 13th, 2026 via Base Layer Records. The project, which premiered on tastemaker publication Soundspace, is an exploration of ‘CHICAGO’, the focus track of his debut EP Delusional, transforming its stems into three new tracks while still retaining the core of the original song. Delusional drew praise from revered publications Magnetic Magazine, CLASH Magazine and Electronic Groove and recently received a progressive house makeover from powerhouse producer Oliver Schories, which premiered on esteemed tastemaker When We Dip.

Born in Santa Rosa, California and now based in Portland, Oregon, FENRA is the electronic moniker of producer B Laws, who grew up surrounded by art and first fell in love with harmony while listening to hymns in church with his grandmother. After teaching himself guitar at the age of 14 and later experimenting with synths, vocals, and drums in bands that toured across the US, Europe, and Asia, he is now channeling his experience into a new artistic chapter. Drawing inspiration from pioneers like Caribou, Four Tet, Floating Points, Bonobo, and DJ Koze, as well as the minimalist elegance of Philip Glass, FENRA crafts music that bridges the cinematic with the deeply personal. With his latest EP, he offers a compelling slice of his genre-blurring sound, sure to resonate with fans of those whom he listed as his inspirations.
The three tracks in the EP draw from the stems of the original ‘CHICAGO’, a footwork-leaning breakbeat cut driven by shuffling percussion, airy synth motifs and choral textures. ‘CHICAGO AM’ is vast and cinematic, while closer ‘CHICAGO REM’ meanders through surreal textures, venturing into dreamier territory. The EP’s centrepiece and focus track, ‘CHICAGO PM’, centres percussion from the outset. With rhythm pushed to the front, the track favours momentum and forward motion over atmosphere. The drum patterns are tight and repetitive, looping with precision as the energy steadily builds to a hypnotic pinnacle – perfectly capturing the lengths to which the motifs of the original track can stretch.
Speaking on the EP, FENRA shared: “The EP started as an experiment: I took the stems from my track ‘CHICAGO’ and tried to reinterpret them three completely different ways. One became cinematic and slow-moving, another leaned fully into a club context, and the last drifted into something more dreamy and abstract. I was interested in how far the same source material could be pulled while still feeling connected.”
